Scicli: the town
Due to the landscape shape Scicli is characterised by a particular urban structure. The 'Cave' (quarries, pits), narrow valleys formed by several torrential rivers, are surrounding the town with a scenery of breathtaking beauty, which becomes particularly fascinating when the rays of the setting sun are warmly reflected by the ochre coloured rocks and Baroque style 'Palazzi'. Following the quake of 1693, the town was splendidly rebuilt and offers nowadays exquisite examples of Sicilian Baroque architecture: the 'Palazzi' like the Palazzo Beneventano, Palazzo Veneziano Sgarlata, Palazzo Spadaro and the churches of S. Bartolomeo, S. Giovanni and the 'Convento del Carmine'. But maybe it is San Matteo, Scicli’s former mother church standing on a rocky hilltop above the caverns of Chiafura, which fascinates the most. Scicli and its ancient history (neolithic caves), longed-for by different people (Arabs, Normans, Spaniards) were extolled by Pasolini, Elio Vittorini, Vitaliano Brancati, its beauties painted by great painters like Guccione, Polizzi and Sarnari, the founders of the 'Scicli Movement'. |
