Scicli: the territory
The territory of the town of Scicli covers a surface of about 137,57 square kilometres and besides the centre it includes three outlying villages (Donnalucata, Cava d'Aliga and Sampieri) and numerous 'Contrade' (hamlets). The landscape of the countryside of Ragusa is markedly different from the common conception of Sicily. It is characterised by stone walls, which are still used to enclose the properties. These walls form captivating patterns on the intensely green hills, which are typical for this part of Sicily. The other element, which characterises the landscape, is the carob tree; its fruits are used for the production of sweets and liquor. |
